Newquay Zoo’s fundraising campaign receives a HUGE boost

The 1st Newquay Beavers have raised an amazing £8,500 by taking part in various weekly missions through lockdown earlier this year. One of their big missions was called ‘Zoom to the Zoo’, where all the Beaver Scouts were encouraged to cycle, walk or scoot every day around their local area for four weeks.

Taking their daily exercise and fresh air with a sense of purpose was a really great idea but they couldn’t know when they started just how amazing it would turn out to be. They reached their modest initial target quite quickly through the support of family and friends but then word spread and it started getting remarkable momentum gaining wider sponsorship and both radio and TV coverage as well.

Dave Folland, Newquay Zoo Operations Manager said: “The amount that 1st Newquay Beavers has raised for Newquay Zoo is phenomenal. They were repeatedly emailing me to say they had reached their targets again and so were aiming higher. Their final figure of £8,500 is simply astounding.

Not so well known is that they also sent in pictures and treats for the staff during lockdown that kept us all going and boosted morale at a very difficult and worrying time.  In such a difficult year, the money they raised really makes a difference, their fundraising alone will feed all our animals for over a month and we really cannot say thank you enough.

Newquay Zoo has been here for over 50 years and clearly still holds a big part in people’s hearts, and the zoo’s relationship with the young people of Newquay is so important in inspiring them to look after the rich and diverse natural world around us.”

Baloo, Vicki Bramhall: “As the Beaver Leader here at 1st Newquay Beavers, I am so proud of each and every one of my Beaver Scouts for taking part in this amazing fundraiser during the lockdown period. They and their families showed resilience, strength and enthusiasm throughout, as well as coming together with the local community to support our local zoo through the ‘ Zoom to The Zoo’ fundraiser.  We hope our efforts will improve things if only a little for the animals and keepers at Newquay Zoo and we look forward to engaging in further activities alongside the zoo in the future. Adventure is out there!”
